2010 was another great year for PVHS athletics, but no team had more success, and more fun doing it, than PVHS Cross Country. All students are welcome on this team, especially fast ones!
This past year, we went to Mammoth Mountain for our summer training camp, traveled to and won an invitational in Hawaii, won a Bay League championship, finished 1st (girls) and 2nd (boys) in CIF, and sent both boys and girls teams to the state championship where the boys and girls were both 2nd! Our girls were led by Rebecca Mehra (2nd) and Erica Capellino (5th). Justin Unno (4th) and Jonah Diaz (8th) led the boys at state. There is no doubt about it, PVHS has the premier running program in the South Bay.
The Cross Country teams are well coached by Brian Shapiro, Jeff Atkinson, and Alex Broughton.
Coach Shapiro won two CIF titles and a state championship in high school before moving on to Washington University where he captained the team that won 3 consecutive conference championships.
Coach Atkinson is a living legend. A high school cross country national finalist, he led the Stanford Cardinal to PAC-10 titles before turning pro. Coach Atkinson was the 1988 national champion in the mile and finished 10th in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. He was the American Record holder and has run a mile in 3:52!
We sincerely hope that you will come run with us this summer. We practice every weekday during the summer at Malaga Cove Plaza at 4pm. Please come by to check it out. Our first practice will be Friday, June 10th.
2011 looks to be another championship year for Sea King Cross Country. We’re even traveling to New York in October! We sincerely hope that you join us!
Yours in pursuit of excellence,
Brian Shapiro Jeff Atkinson Alex Broughton |
