Disaster Measures

In the event of a campus-wide emergency, the Disaster Drill Team will be mobilized, and trained emergency response teams will be dispatched to specific areas of the campus, depending upon the nature of the event.

The PVHS disaster plan provides information as to the procedures to be followed by students and staff in the event of an emergency.

Specific measures put in place by the Disaster Drill Team and the Palos Verdes Estates Police and Fire Departments to ensure the safety of the PVHS community include:

  • ParentLink Notification System
PVPUSD utilizes the ParentLink notification system that will notify parents in the event of an emergency. ParentLink will make phone calls, text messages and e-mails that detail specific instructions for student pick up and precautions to be taken. Please sign up for ParentLink.
  • Building Teams and Supply Kits
The school has 4 trained emergency response teams that will provide immediate guidance to students, faculty, staff and visitors in the event of an actual campus emergency - whether a fire, earthquake or other incident. Each room also is equipped with two emergency supply kits, a back pack containing first-aid supplies and a bucket with other general emergency supplies.
  • Annual Disaster Drills
PVHS holds two annual drills (dates) in which the entire campus is evacuated to the field. These drills are monitored by the PVHS PTSA, the PVE Fire Department as well as district officials. Two lock-down drills are also held on campus each year. Following each drill, the disaster drill team meets to review what should be changed in the event of a real emergency.
  • First-aid Supply Shed
First-aid supplies for uses in an emergency are maintained in a shed near the office buildings.
  • Water and Emergency Food Reserves
If the public water supply becomes contaminated or disabled, PVHS’s water reserves can provide water for drinking and first-aid. In addition, the school has stockpiled food bars on both the field and upper campus area sufficient to provide three meals for each student and employee.
  • Disaster Mental Health Response Team
The school nurse, psychologists and counselors have developed a team to provide counseling and stress services for PVHS responders and disaster victims.
  • Campus Operations
As set forth in PVPUSD board policy and administrative guidelines, the school principal and district officials will determine whether classes and other school operations will be suspended.
  • Emergency Preparedness Training
To help ensure that the campus is prepared to deal with a major emergency, the Los Angeles County Fire Department provides training seminars for staff, faculty and student groups upon request. The training focuses primarily on earthquake preparedness but can be tailored to cover other types of emergencies as well.

To schedule a seminar, please call Nick Stephany at (310) 378-8471 ext 252.
